Nelo Surfskis 2017-09-25T16:01:51+00:00

In 2015 Oscar Chalupsky joined Nelo as CEO of Surfskis, bringing his long history of success in both surfski racing as well as surfski design and manufacturing.  Nelo has offered Surfskis since 2009.  While they were very fast with great ergonomics, the low stability allowed only truly elite paddlers to take advantage of their high end performance.  Oscar’s goal is to revamp the Nelo surfski line, designing and producing boats that work with a broader level of paddlers while keeping the Nelo tradition of providing high performance, ergonomic boats.  The 560 family was the first Nelo Surfski to be redesigned, followed by the new 520, 600 double, 510 and soon to be released 550.  Anyone who has paddled the 560 and 520 can testify that Oscar’s work and Nelo’s renewed dedication to the surfski market is definitely on track!!

FastPadder is proud to be responsible for Nelo Surfski and ICF sales in the Northeast US, as an agent for EliteOceanSports.  We have the latest boats available for local demos and can work with any paddler on boat selection, construction options, colors and the ordering process.  From personal experience, there is no substitute for paddling a boat before investing.  Please check our demo schedule for both Nelo Boats and Braca paddles, or contact us for a personal demo.  Hope to see you soon on the water!

Nelo Surfski Summary:  Scroll down for more details, reviews, multimedia, etc, of each surfski.

Nelo 560L Surfski

Length: 560cm (18’4″)
Width: 45cm (17.5″)
Weight / Price:
SCS/7: 10–11kg (22-24lbs)  $4,395.
WWR/4: 11–12kg (24–26.5lbs)  $3,495.

Stability 2 – The 560, now renamed the 560L, has the stability of an Elite Surfski but not as tippy as a few of the other Elite skis on the market. For Intermediate paddlers a great flat water to moderate wave surfski but will need practice to paddle in larger ocean conditions. The 560L provides elite level acceleration, incredible high end speed and great ergonomics. Athlete Range of 73kg to 120kg (160 to 260 lbs)

Nelo 560ML Surfski

Length: 560cm (18’4″)
Width: 45cm (17.5″)
Weight / Price:
SCS/7: 10–11kg (22-24lbs)  $4,395.
WWR/4: 11–12kg (24–26.5lbs)  $3,495.

Stability 2 – The 560ML has evolved based on request to provide a smaller 560M bucket for the higher volume 560L.  While some lighter paddlers (towards the 77kg/170lb of the range) have enjoyed the size of the 560M bucket, they have requested a higher volume ski.  Also for those paddlers who need the footplate closer and the bucket narrower then the 560L.   The 560ML fits this perfect!

Nelo 560M Surfski

Length: 560cm (18’4″)
Width: 52cm (17.5″)
Weight / Price:
SCS/7: 10–11kg (22-24lbs)  $4,395.
WWR/4: 11–12kg (24–26.5lbs)  $3,495.

Stability 2 – The 560M is a new design for lighter paddlers who weigh < 77kg (170lbs).  An elite surfski that paddles like an ICF boat, with great speed and acceleration.  Believe the lowest volume surfski on the market.  Feedback from our lighter/smaller paddlers has been excellent.   Also an excellent alternative to a an ICF K1 for flat water conditions.

Nelo 550 (M, ML, & L) Surfskis

Demo in Boston
Length:
550cm (18’1″)
Width: TBD
Weight / Price:
SCS/7: 10–11kg (22-24lbs)  $4,395.
WWR/4: 11–12kg (24–26.5lbs)  $3,495.

Stability 3 or 4 –  Then new 550 bridges the gap between the 520 and 560.  Preliminary feedback from paddlers we have talked to who have paddled the 550 is it has stability near the 520 with speed very close to the 560.  This boat is targeted at those paddlers who may be hesitant to take their elite ski (560 class) out in bigger conditions with anticipation of giving up speed due to stability.   The 550 will also be available with three bucket sizes: M, ML and L – addressing the needs of all size paddlers.  We will have demos in the Northeast as soon as possible!!

Nelo 520 Surfski

Length: 520cm (17’)
Width: 52cm (20.5″)
Weight / Price:
SCS/7: 10–11kg (22-24lbs)  $4,395.
WWR/4: 11–12kg (24–26.5lbs)  $3,495.

Stability 4 – The 520 offers the stability of an intermediate surfski with the paddling ergonomics of the Nelo 560 elite surfski.  The low weight and hull design allow the 520 to be a nimble fun boat to paddle in a broad range of conditions.    While the 520 may not have the top end speed of a 560 class surfski, its excellent acceleration combined with very good speed for a boat with this much stability, allows it to be very competitive in all conditions.

Nelo 600 Double Surfski

Length: 600cm (19’8″)
Width: 60cm (23.6″)
Weight / Price:
SCS/7:  16–17kg (35.3-37.5lbs)  $5,895.
WWR/4: 18–19kg (39.7–42lbs)  $4,395.
A1/2: 20–21kg (44–46.3lbs)  $3,495.

Stability 5 – The new 600 Double Surfski is based on the highly success 520 and is the shortest double ski’s on the market (600cm or 19′ 8″). The relative shortness of the ski allows for a very maneuverable and dynamic ski for catching runs, as well easier transport and storage. The 600 can also be steered from either the front bucket, or the rear bucket, providing a great platform for training – teaching how to catch waves or even just observing your partner’s stroke!

Nelo 510 Polyethylene Surfski

Length: 510cm (16’ 9″)
Width: 55cm (21.7″)
Weight / Price:
PE / Polyethylene:
22-23kg (48.5 -50lbs)  $1,595.

Stability 5 – The 510 is Nelo’s first Surfski made in polyethylene.  Extremely durable and weighing only 22Kg, this is the perfect boat for any conditions and experience level, while being very cost effective.  The 510 has the stability and speed very close to the 520 while offering the benefits of durability and lower cost.  For those looking for a lighter faster surfski with similar stability, yet higher speed and accelaration we’d recommend the 520 WWR.

The Nelo Surfski Advantage:

  • Designed for Performance –  All Nelo Surfskis follow the long heritage of performance products that Nelo has been bringing to the Market for over 40 years.  Whether you are looking at the race bred 560 or the entry 510, all of the skis have similar performance characteristics – with the main difference being increased stability for a slightly less top end speed as you move down in the line.
  • Ergonomic Paddling Position – Nelo has always been know for putting a very strong emphasis on ergonomics, and the new Nelo surfskis continue to reflect this trait. The bucket is positioned with the bottom of the seat slightly higher then the bottom of the bucket where your heels sit,  giving you a “K1′ like position that facilitates better rotation and less strain on your lower back.  The shape of the back of the bucket provides just enough support without impeding rotation, and the foot well is just wide enough to allow movement with out restriction.
  • Narrow Catch – All the Nelo Surfskis, like their world champion K1s, provide very narrow catches allowing the the blade to enter closer to the center line of the boat maximizing the all important catch phase of the stroke.  Also the angle of the hull at the top of the gunnel near the catch is angled properly to allow setting the blade very close to the hull at start of the stroke.
  • Shorter Length – All Nelo Surfskis are shorter then the traditional surfskis.   Nelo has extensive experience with creating the highest performance K1s at 520cm (17′), gaining an incredible knowledge of length vs drag (created by wetted surface).   Shorter length allows for faster accelerations, easier transport and better maneuverability on waves.   Another benefit is the ability to create a better, overall constructed product while keeping the weight down (due to less material required).  This allows for a very strong, stiff, durable SCS construction at 10.5kgs (23lbs) and WWR construction at 11.5kgs (25.5lbs) that would weigh approx 15% more if they were the typical length of 640cm (21′).
  • Adjustable Footplate – The new Nelo Surfski footplate offers comfort, peformance and flexibility.  3 different footplate angles, easy precise adjustment and included solid pullbar with GoPro mount (softstrap optional).  Click to see Oscars showing adjustability of the new footplate.
  • Easy Remounting – All the Nelo Surfskis are some of the easiest to remount in the industry, primarily due to the low gunwales at the bucket.  While lower gunwales do create for a wetter ride, a bow waveguard and very fast draining bailer keep the bucket empty.  Check out Leslie’s easy remount of the 520.
  • De Brito Bailer – Designed by Magnus De Brito from Sweden, this closeable bailer empties the cockpit within a few strokes even at low speeds. Foot operation makes it easy and intuitive to open and close in all conditions.  Also very maintainable and easy to repair/replace if needed.  Nelo also includes 2 inserts: Race and Standard.
  • Color / Graphics – Last but not least, Nelo offers the most colorful combinations with customization graphics.  Why settle for the same looking surfski as other folks on the water.  More details below!

Construction  Technology and Options

All Nelo Surfskis are constructed with “UNICO” technology, which have no seams  that have been traditionally used to connect the hull to the deck.  Nelo first started using seamless construction in the previous generation of surfskis, the OceanSki and VintageSki and have carried it over to the current new models,  providing the stiffest boats possible while eliminating the chance of a failure at the seam.  If you notice in the 560M below, you will see a cosmetic edge that transitions the deck to the hull, but no seam.  This line fades as you get to the bow.

SCS/7: “No.7” build, SCS , utilizes an all carbon epoxy vacuum technology.   It is Nelo’s stiffest surfski construction with an approximate weight range of 10 – 11 kg (22 – 24lbs) in the 560 class surfski. A heavier paddler (85kg plus) who is very experienced may notice the extra stiffness difference between the SCS and WWR when the boat is under hard acceleration or fighting upwind chop, but otherwise the stiffness difference over the WWR is very hard to decipher. Certainly both builds are very stiff and light. The other difference is the SCS/7 includes custom colors and design graphics included in the price.

WWR/4: “No.4” build, WWR, utilizes  a carbon carbon-Kevlar vacuum technology. It comes in standard colors with basic graphics and is around the 11kg- 12kg (24 – 26.5lb) weight range.

A1/2: “No.2” build utilizes a fiberglass epoxy technology providing very good performance at an economic price.  Currently, only the 600 Double is available in A1.

Custom Colors and Graphics

All Nelo boats can be ordered in an array of colors and customized graphics.   We pre-order boats with various colors and graphics, but you can order a multitude of color combinations and graphics.  Custom graphics are included in the price of the SCS constructed boats, will be optional on any other boats.   Below are some examples of the various designs.

560L Surfski

$4395 (SCS/7)   $3495 (WWR/4)

The New 560 (now renamed the 560L as the family of 560s has been introduced) has evolved from the old 560.  A lot of people ask us why is it shorter then the 6.4 meters long like most of the skis. The answer is simple: its relative shortness makes it one of the easier downwind surfski’s to paddle, to steer and to balance in all conditions. The seat has been made wider and lowered to accommodate a much wider part of the paddling population. “Stability before ability”.

Stability Level 2

Stability of an Elite Surfski but not as tippy as a few of the Elite skis on the market.  For Intermediate paddlers a great flat water to moderate wave surfski but will need practice to paddle in larger ocean conditions.  The 560 provides elite level acceleration, incredible high end speed and great ergonomics. Athlete Range of 75kg to 120kg

All Nelo surfskis come with the following accessories included:

The standard rudder will be made from carbon and a core material and the weedless from a poly-carbonate material. This is a unique feature for the new Nelo Surfski range.

Closeble Bailer: designed by Magnus De Brito from Sweden and empties the cockpit within a few strokes even at low speeds. Foot operation makes it easy and intuitive to open and close in all conditions.

Wave Deflector: It allows it to decrease the volume in the surfski boats but also makes them easier to handle hard conditions. It deflects the water from the cockpit making it easier to stay dry and in control.

Surfski Sock (Included with SCS and WWR): A very easy to put on and take off cover with a draw string closure. Helps protect the surfski from harmful UV rays.
